PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of initializing a perpendicular magnetic recording medium for suitably initializing (demagnetizing) the perpendicular magnetic recording medium before perpendicular magnetic transfer of a magnetic information pattern such as a format information pattern to the perpendicular magnetic recording medium, to provide the perpendicular magnetic recording medium subjected to perpendicular magnetic transfer after the completion of initialization by the initialization method, and to provide a magnetic recording apparatus having the perpendicular magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The method of initializing the perpendicular magnetic recording medium is provided in which a magnetic field G having a magnetic field intensity Hexis applied to the perpendicular magnetic recording medium 40 having a magnetic layer 40B having a coercive force Hc to initialize the magnetic layer.
