PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially advantageous method for producing a halogen-substituted benzenedimethanol. SOLUTION: A halogen-substituted terephthalic acid expressed by formula (1) (X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>4</SP>are each independently hydrogen atom or halogen atom provided that at least one of X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>4</SP>is halogen atom) is made to react with a boron hydride compound in the presence of an organic solvent and the obtained reaction mixture is made to react with hydrogen chloride at 40-70°C to obtain the corresponding halogen-substituted benzenedimethanol.
