A system and a method for recognizing a container number are provided to correctly recognize the container number even if characters or numbers of the container number are damaged by using cameras capturing a surface image of a container and a position detector comprising sensors for detecting entry/exit of the container. A gate house(10) passes a vehicle loading the container. The position detector comprises penetration type sensors paired by each light emitter(200a-200f)/receiver(200a'-200f') installed to both inner sides of the gate house along a container advancing direction. An imaging device(300) comprises the cameras(300a-300d) installed to a left/right side in the gate house, and captures each surface image of the container. A controller enables each camera to capture the surface image by a detected container position signal, and extracts the container number marked to a left, right, upper, and rear side of the container by analyzing the captured images. The controller discriminates preciseness of each character or number of the container number by comparing a character number of the container number extracted from the image with a reference number, and outputs the final container number based on a discrimination result. |
