A dipole type field emission display is provided to simplify a driving process of the field emission display by controlling an application timing of a control signal, which is supplied to a switching element. Plural stripe type cathodes(12) are formed in parallel to each other on a glass substrate. Plural anodes(15') are repeatedly formed on the respective cathodes. The stripe type anodes are arranged to be normal to the cathodes, which are formed on the glass substrate. A cathode plate includes a field emitter, which emits electrons when an electric field is applied thereon. Fluorescent material(16) is repeatedly formed on the respective anodes and emit light, when they are collided with the electrons from the field emitter. The cathodes are coupled with a ground potential via a switching element, such that the field emitter ejects the electrons when the cathodes are coupled with the ground potential.
