<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To handle an image equal with or larger than a standard management size with a standard image format with which a read image of a long-size original can be handled also by another printer or personal computer. <P>SOLUTION: In an image reader for reading a long-size original 701, image data of the read long-size original 701 are divided into multiple files, divided image data 701a-701d are compressed by a preset standard method (JPEG), compressed image data 702a-702d are stored, and JPEG markers 703a-703d indicating the contents of the stored image data are added to the compressed image data 702a-702d.
