An apparatus and a method for supporting a relay service in a multi-hop relay BWA(Broadband Wireless Access) communication system are provided to time-division-multiplex signal transmission into a termination link region and a middle link region and offer a direct link service and a relay link service in a synchronous frame type. A base station allocates resources for a termination link subframe interval and a middle link subframe interval(1101). Then, the base station executes communication with mobile stations through the termination link subframe interval(1103). Afterwards, the base station executes communication with relay stations by using the middle link subframe interval(1105). For example, during downlink interval, the base station transmits control information and traffic bursts to the mobile stations during the termination link subframe interval. Also, during the middle link subframe interval, the base station transmits control information and traffic bursts to the relay stations. During uplink interval, the base station receives initial ranging information and traffic bursts from the mobile stations during the termination link subframe interval. During the middle link subframe interval, the base station receives initial ranging information and traffic bursts from the relay stations.
