An improved design ash tray for fitting into a vehicle has a lid (2) with a sprung hinge mounting on the top of a slider (5) which is located against a guide plate (4). As the lid is opened the slider moves upwards under spring force to raise the hinge and thereby reduce the friction wear of the profiled cam (16) which holds the lid in the open or closed positions.
