PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a fatty acid ester having a low sulfur content, and a method for producing an alcohol by using the fatty acid ester obtained by the above method. SOLUTION: This method for producing the fatty acid ester is provided by performing the adsorption treatment of the sulfur in the raw material fatty acid ester by using an adsorbent containing 10-85 wt.% metal (based on the content as a metal oxide in the total amount of adsorbent) of at least 1 kind selected from Ni and Cu, and having 0.15 to 1.0 mL/g pore volume in 20 to 200 nm range pore diameter. The method for producing an alcohol is provided by performing hydrogenation reaction by using the fatty acid ester obtained by the above production method as the raw material.
