PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator capable of automatically positioning a rod integrator according to colors and maintaining always satisfactory light utilization efficiency. SOLUTION: In the illuminator configured so that an illumination luminous flux emitted from a light source 13 having a lamp 11 and a reflector 12 is made incident on a rod integrator 21 through a color wheel 19 rotationally driven by a wheel driving means 20 while holding different color filters on the same circumference, the illuminator has: a supporting member 33 which supports the wheel driving means; a holder 41 which holds a rod integrator; an elastic support member 42 which supports the holder so as to be able to displace in an optical axis direction on a support member; holder driving means 51, 52 which drive the holder in an optical axis direction; and position detecting means 23, 24R, 24G, 24B which detect the position in the optical axis direction of the holder, wherein the position in the optical axis direction of the holder by the holder driving means based on the output of the position detecting means is controlled based on the different color filters of the color wheel.
