<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color memory type discoloring writing instrument by which the writing trace has color retaining property being hard to discolor under a normal service condition, and at the same time, which can develop a color, decolor or discolor into a different color tone by performing a light irradiation to the writing trace from a light source being provided on the writing instrument, and in addition, is equipped with adoptability in various kinds of fields such as studying, an information transmission and a falsification prevention, and is rich in convenience. <P>SOLUTION: This color memory type discoloring writing instrument is constituted by housing a diaryl ethene based photochromic compound as an optical discoloring agent, and a color memory type optical discoloring ink consisting of at least water and/or an organic solvent in the writing instrument. In this case, the writing instrument is constituted by connecting the writing distal end section with the barrel or a refill directly or through a connecting member.
