Tubular blanks cut at 4 from a web are welded by jaws 14, 15 spaced apart on a moving endless member 16 by less than the lengths of the blanks which are supported only at the heat-sealed end. In the form illustrated the cut-off blanks are fed by rollers 7, 8 through a funnel 9, 10, associated with the heat-sealing jaws against a stop plate 11 and are then gripped by further jaws 12, 13. When the trailing end of the blank issues from the rollers 7, 8 its direction of fall is determined by guards 20 also carried by the conveyer 16, so that the open ends of the blanks trail over a surface 21. Alternatively the trailing ends may be deflected by a pivoting flap (25), (Fig. 2b, not shown). The heat-sealing jaws may be pulse-heated and preferably open before the retaining jaws 12, 13. The bags fall on to a conveyer 22 the speed of which can be varied to vary the extent by which the bags are nested, and each may be driven intermittently or non-uniformly, under the control of a counter, to batch the bags. The speed of the cutter 4 may be varied to vary the length of the bags. |
