PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a DC demagnetizer which can lengthen the life of a DC demagnetizing head. SOLUTION: The DC demagnetizer has: a tape transport to set a magnetic tape MT; the DC demagnetizing head 21 disposed facing the magnetic tape MT to DC demagnetize the recording layer MT2 by generating a DC magnetic field; a controller to run the magnetic tape MT by controlling the tape transport; and the DC demagnetizing head driver to move the DC demagnetizing head 21 in the direction crossing the travelling direction of the magnetic tape MT. The width HHW of the DC demagnetizing head 21 outputting a magnetizing force larger than the magnetic saturation of the recording layer MT2 is larger than the width TW of the recording layer MT2. The DC demagnetizing head driver moves the DC demagnetizing head 21 so that the operation widthΔW from the center of the width HHW of the DC demagnetizing head 21 satisfies 0<ΔW≤(HHW-TW)/2, and that the width TW of the recording layer MT2 is kept within the width HHW of the DC demagnetizing head 21.
