PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium checker which controls the floating height of a checker head slider. SOLUTION: This recording medium checker floats the head slider on a turning recording medium, and detects the collisions between the slider and the surface projections being the defects on the recording medium, by using a sensor, to check whether the projections are higher than the predetermined height. The checker has: an output acquisition means to obtain the output of the sensor detecting the collisions between the floating slider and the reference recording medium having projections of a predetermined height; a floating height regulator to regulate the floating by applying a voltage between the head slider and the reference recording medium based on the obtained output; and a checking means to decide the quality of the checked recording medium at the regulated floating height.
