PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a glass optical element capable of suppressing generation of optical strain and reduction of the refractive index without reducing productivity and degrading optical performance. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a glass optical element comprises a press-molding step comprising softening by heating a glass material which is preformed into a predetermined shape and press-molding the softened glass material using a molding die to obtain the glass optical element. The glass material is composed of optical glass having a photoelastic constant B of less than 2.00×10<SP>-12</SP>/Pa. In addition, the refractive index nd(L) of the optical element obtained in the above manufacturing method is lower than the refractive index nd(S) of the optical element obtained by subjecting the optical element to precision annealing by 30×10<SP>-5</SP>or more.
