<p>Chlorocarbonylsulphene chloride, Cl.CO.S.Cl, is prepared by heating a vigorously stirred mixture of concentrated sulphuric acid, trichloromethylsulphenyl chloride and water at 45 DEG to 50 DEG C. for 1 to 1.5 hours. The resulting upper phase contains crude Cl.CO.S.Cl which is purified by distillation, b.p. 98 DEG C/760 mm. Hg; n20D: 1.5158.ALSO:Novel herbicidal compounds of the general formula <FORM:1115350/C2/1> wherein R represents an alkyl, alkoxy and/or alkymercapto radical with in each case 1 to 3 carbons and/or halogen, R1 represents hydrogen or an aliphatic radical with 1 to 4 carbons (which may be substituted by halogen) and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3 are prepared by the interaction of chlorocarbonylsulphene chloride and the appropriate urea derivative.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions contain as the active ingredient compounds of the general formula:- <FORM:1115350/A5-A6/1> wherein R represents an alkyl, alkoxy and/or alkylmercapto radical with in each case 1 to 3 carbons and/or halogen, R/sv represents hydrogen or an aliphatic radical with 1 to 4 carbons (which may be substituted by halogen) and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3. Formulations include solutions, emulsions, suspensions, powders, pastes and granulates which may be mixed with extenders, i.e., solid or liquid diluents or carriers, optionally in the presence of surface active agents, i.e., emulsifying agents and/or dispersing agents. Known active compounds, such as phenoxycarboxylic acids, nitrated phenols, ureas, uracils, triazines or carbonates may be present in the formulations.</p> |
