A determination method of magnetic dipole ambiguity in position tracking measurements is provided to determine relative coordinates by combining transcendental information related to positions with relative measured values of magnetic fields. First and second magnetic fields are generated around first and second targets by using first and second field generators arranged at first and second locations, respectively. The first and second fields are measured by using first and second position sensors associated with the first and second targets, respectively. First potential relative coordinates(82,90) of the first target to the second target are produced in response to the first magnetic field and second potential relative coordinates(86,94) of the first target to the second target are produced in response to the second magnetic field. The first and second potential relative coordinates are processed to determine a correct relative coordinate of the first target relative to the second target by comparing the first potential relative coordinates with the second potential relative coordinates, and comparing at least one of the first and second potential relative coordinates with transcendental positional information about at least one of the field generators and at least one of the position sensors. |
