PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for more surely obtaining target map data without additionally using a reader such as a scanner and for retrieving and displaying a map of an area indicated by the obtained target map data out of a map database. SOLUTION: A template which is a collection of sample data such as landmarks is displayed, based on which an operation instruction for creating a target map is received and the target map data is inputted (S10). Information of symbols is collected (S30) out of the target map data and, based on the collected information of symbols, a candidate map matching the target map is retrieved (S40) out of the map database. A candidate area list which is a table of names or the like of the respective retrieved candidate areas is displayed (S60), and the map of the candidate area specified by a user out of the candidate area list is displayed (S70). When it is judged that there is a candidate area matching user's intention (S80:YES), the map of the candidate area being displayed is determined (S90) as the map around the destination.
