PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing sodium hydride in a high efficiency directly through only one step reaction from sodium hydroxide without the need for a high temperature heat source nor for a reactant other than sodium hydroxide, and an apparatus to practice the method. SOLUTION: This electrochemical production method of sodium hydride is characterized by the steps of melting and holding sodium hydroxide in an electrolyzing crucible comprising an oxygen ion-conductive solid electrolyte, electrolyzing the sodium hydroxide in an inert atmosphere, separating only oxygen generated to outside the electrolyzing crucible so as to produce sodium hydride in the electrolyzing crucible. In this case, the melting and holding temperature of sodium hydroxide in the electrolyzing crucible is regulated at the melting point of sodium hydroxide or higher but the thermal decomposition temperature of sodium hydride or lower.
