PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thread winding machine of so-called direct drive system having a configuration capable of stabilizing amount of paying-out irrespective of large or small diameter of a package when performing thread end pulling-out work accompanied with inversion of the package such as the time when thread piecing demand is given to improve production efficiency. SOLUTION: This thread winding machine is provided with a diameter sensor for detecting diameter of a thread layer formed by winding a thread around a winding tube and a thread end catching guide means for performing the thread end pulling-out work for sucking a thread end by approaching a peripheral face of the thread layer and guiding the thread end into a thread piecing device. A controller for controlling each part when performing the thread end pulling-out work is provided with a thread end paying-out amount control means, which controls a package driving motor so as to reverse and drive a winding bobbin and controls reversing speed or reversing time of the winding bobbin so as to change it at n steps (wherein, n is an integer of 2 or more) in accordance with the diameter of the thread layer detected by the diameter sensor.
