PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve improvement in transmission efficiency and suppression of noise by properly adjusting the number of meshed gears at each gear-shift stage. SOLUTION: An automobile transmission has forward eight stages and backward one stage or has forward seven stages and backward one stage. The number of meshed gears at each gear-shift stage is set so as to be "four" in a forward first speed, "three" in the backward stage, "two" in from a forward second speed to an eighth speed (or a seventh speed). The meshing number of gears at the forward first speed and the backward stage is set to "four" larger than that of the conventional one. Consequently, it is possible to make the transmission compact while achieving a large gear-shift ratio required at the corresponding gear-shift stage with a burden share of each of the gears. The meshing number of gears at the gear-shift stages including regular-use gear-shift stages of the seventh speed and the eighth speed is reduced to "two". Consequently, it is possible to suppress gear meshing noise while improving transmission efficiency at such regular-use gear-shift stages, that is, the gear-shift stages regularly used for a long period of time.
