PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slip detection method which can accurately detect slip between a slab and pinch rolls during transporting the slab in a width reduction press equipment for a slab, and a slip prevention method which can accurately prevent slip on the basis thereof. SOLUTION: A processing unit 17 calculates the difference between the actual value and the predicted value relative to the current value of pinch roll driving motors 5, 6, to the rotation speed of the pinch rolls 3, 4, and to the load of a press die 2 respectively, and according to difference thereof, it is determined whether or not the slip occurs between the slab and the pinch rolls 3, 4 during transporting the slab.
