PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silver halide photosensitive material for a color proof which resembles an object print in color and excels in raw stock preservability, and an area gradation image forming method using the silver halide photosensitive material. SOLUTION: The silver halide photosensitive material has at least one photosensitive layer and a non-photosensitive layer on one surface of a reflective support obtained by coating both surfaces of base paper with a water-resistant resin and has only a non-photosensitive layer on the other surface, wherein a transmission density of a white background obtained by development of the silver halide photosensitive material is 0.60-0.80 and the reflective support has a thickness of 80-140μm. A total content of a white pigment contained in the non-photosensitive layers and the photosensitive layer is preferably 2.0-4.0 g/m<SP>2</SP>. A total content of the white pigment contained on the surface of the reflective support opposite to the surface having the photosensitive layer is preferably 0.8-2.2 g/m<SP>2</SP>.
