A composite for use as a reinforcing element in belts or in the bead zone of a vehicle tire comprises a multilayered construction with (A) a predominantly oriented layer (14, 14>) comprising a non-metallic strengthening carrier embedded in a rubber or plastics matrix (12) and having a modulus of elasticity >=50 Gpa; and (B) polymer films (10, 10>) covering both sides of layer (14, 14>).
