PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a network device to dynamically build VLAN interfaces based on subscriber information strings included within packets. SOLUTION: The network device comprises an interface controller 38 and a forwarding controller 46, where the forwarding controller forwards a received packet to the interface controller. The interface controller comprises an Ethernet(R) module 52 that dynamically builds a PVS based on Ethernet(R) tagging information included within the packet. The Ethernet(R) module also dynamically builds an SVS based on the subscriber information string. The SVS allows the network device to distinguish between subscribers residing on the same VLAN, and, therefore, to provide subscriber specific services. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
