PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high strength stainless steel spring having excellent workability and high load characteristics. SOLUTION: The high strength stainless steel spring has a composition consisting of, by mass, 0.04 to 0.08% C, 0.15 to 0.22% N, 0.3 to 2.0% Si, 0.5 to 3.0% Mn, 16 to 20% Cr, 8.0 to 10.5% Ni, 0.5 to 3.0% Mo and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Moreover, the value of D/d or D/d' as a spring index ranges is from 2 to 6 when D represents the average coil diameter of the spring; (d) represents the diameter of a stainless steel wire in the case where the cross section of the steel wire is of a perfect round shape, and (d') represents a value obtained by subtracting the average coil diameter from an outer coil diameter when the cross section of the stainless steel wire is of a shape other than the perfect round shape.
