PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for reproducing multi-valued information which reduces erroneous detection and attains high-density recording and reproduction by determining the multi-valued information based on not only a cell median but also the sum of the median and a median of an adjacent cell. SOLUTION: The multi-valued information is determined based on not only the cell median but also the sum of the median of the cell and the median of the adjacent cell. That is, the erroneous detection is reduced by determining the multi-valued information based on both of the median of the cell sampled when the light spot center reaches the center of the cell and the sum of the cell median and the cell median of the adjacent cell.
