PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet carrying device, capable of reliably determining double feed of sheets at the first try in either case of total double feed and partial double feed, and eliminating unnecessary actuation of a double feed detection sensor so as to extend parts life. SOLUTION: The sheet carrying device, and the image forming device, in their representative constitution, comprise a pair of carrying rollers R1 to carry sheets, a copy sheet selection key 607 to preliminarily designate length L3 of the sheets in the carrying direction, a jam detection sensor 16 to detect if there is a sheet or not, the double feed detection sensor 12 disposed downstream of the jam detection sensor 16 in the sheet carrying direction to detect double feed of the sheets, and a CPU 801 to compute detection start timing T when a position of the sheet at prescribed quantity L2 before a rear end of the sheet reaches the double feed detection sensor 12.
