A method of automatically executing an application on a mobile telecommunications device 2 comprises the steps of coupling a memory card 1 to the device, loading to the mobile device a Symbian õ recogniser from the memory card and executing the loaded recogniser to automatically execute an application also stored on the memory card. Preferably the application is an anti-virus program. The memory card may be connected to the device before it is powered up. Alternatively, it may already be powered. The memory card may be a Multimedia card, Compact Flash, Secure Digital, Min-SD, Memory Stick or SmartMedia card.
