APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR EXECUTING CODEC UPGRADE

An apparatus and a method for performing codec upgrade are provided to receive a new codec through a network interface unit in a home network environment and transmit the received new codec to a corresponding device, thereby upgrading a previous codec. The first transmission/reception part receives a transport stream from a broadcasting enterprise and transmits a codec request message for requesting download of a codec to the broadcasting enterprise. The first parsing part parses a codec packet included in the transport stream and analyzes information included in the codec packet. A codec comparison part compares the analyzed codec information with preliminarily stored codec information and determines whether to download a received codec. A codec search part searches a stream type of a program and codec information corresponding to the stream type from the transport stream, and searches a codec for operating a program of a changed channel. A control part writes the codec request message if there is not the codec for operating the program of the changed channel.
