In a plastic injection moulding machine comprising a movable stock 14 carrying one die and a rigidly mounted support plate 24 carrying another die, operator access between the dies is prevented by a gate 38 which operates cam mechanism which allows movement of the movable die towards the fixed die only when the gate 38 is in the closed position. The gate 38 is slidably mounted on fixed rails 34, 36 by means of rollers 44, one of which is mounted on a bracket 46 carrying a cam 58. A pivotally mounted follower 60 carries a plunger 64 which is adapted to engage a block 66 threaded on to one end of a shaft 70, the other end of which carries a cam 74 which is adapted to co-operate with a roller 76 on a latch member 78. A guide rod 30 attached to the movable die has a series of teeth 82 which are adapted to be engaged by latch member 78 to prevent movement of the movable die towards the fixed die when the gate 38 is open. When the gate 38 is moved to its closed position, an arm 84, secured to bracket 44, engages block 66, thereby moving shaft 70 to the right, as seen in Fig. 1, and causing cam 74 to engage roller 76 and lift latch 78 clear of teeth 82. When the initial position of the movable stock 14 is adjusted, by rotation of nuts 18 or threaded beams 16, the shaft 70 is also moved axially by rotation of a chainwheel 86 mounted thereon. An additional safety device comprises a limit switch 48 in the control circuit of a motor driving a pump providing hydraulic pressure for die movement. A further safety device comprises a valve 52 controlling the flow of fluid for die operation, the valve being opened by the engagement of a cam 56 on the gate 38 with a member 54 on the valve 52.
