An outlet assembly (1) for a ASTOVL aircraft (14) comprises a duct (2) for directing by-pass air to a position forward of the powerplant (46) in order to provide jet efflux for assistance in vertical landing and short take-off. The duct (2) has a curved downstream portion (6) and terminates in a bicuspid portion (7) on which is mounted a nozzle assembly (10). The nozzle assembly (10) can be moved between a vertical landing position in which jet efflux is directed vertically downwards, and an assisted take-off position in which jet efflux is directed at typically 20{ to the horizontal. The nozzle arrangement provides a self-supporting structure for the outlet assembly (1) when in its extended position. A surface (14) of the nozzle (10) forms a closure member for an aperture in the main body portion (8) of the aircraft when in a retracted position. |
