In a method of producing bearing material an approximately vertical free-falling molten stream of a first metal has added to it a second metal or compound of the second metal, the second metal being of higher specific gravity than the first, the combined stream being collected and chilled on a moving substantially horizontal surface, the combined stream thus solidified before separation of the metals can take place. In Fig. 1 molten aluminium flows from furnace 1 through channel 3, under adjustable baffle 7, and has lead compound added from vibrating hopper 15, and then falls on to belt 8 Fixed guide walls 9, 10, 11 and the undersurface of the belt are cooled, or side plates 9, 10 are heated at one end and cooled at the other. The combined vertical stream may be heated or cooled or both. Furnace 1, channel 3 and belt 8 are adjustably tiltable, Belt 8 may be replaced by an aluminized steel strip on to which is coated the molten aluminium lead alloy. |
