1,126,774. Laminates. DEUTSCHE SPIEGELGLAS A.G. 18 Jan., 1966, No. 2301/66. Heading B5N. A glass-reinforced plastics article, e.g. a windscreen, comprises a plurality of glass foils each of thickness 50 to 100 Ám embedded in and extending substantially throughout the plastics material in substantially parallel arrangement, the plastics material having substantially the same refractive index as the glass foils and undergoing little shrinkage on hardening or curing. The article may have one or more surfaces coated with a thin polished glass panel. The article may be prepared by embedding a plurality of the glass foils in the plastics material, the foils being in substantially parallel arrangement and extending substantially throughout the article. The glass foils may be prepared by drawing from molten glass and the edges of the drawn foils are removed and discarded, the foils electrostatically charged and then embedded in the plastics material. The plastics material may be colourless or transparently coloured thermoplastics, polyesters or epoxy resins which may be applied as the monomer and polymerized in situ. |
