An electric display system includes electric display material having two opposing outer surfaces, wherein at least one of the outer surfaces is at least partially covered in a plurality of spaced apart, charge-retaining islands comprised of a conductive material with areas of the insulating material interposed therebetween. A charge transfer device is arranged in operative association with the display material, having a first component made of a flexible, non-conductive material and a plurality of individually adjustable conductive elements, wherein movement of one adjustable conductive element does not result in movement of another adjustable conductive element.
