An AGC(Automatic Gain Control) device for a broadcasting receiver and a method therefor are provided to adaptively adjust a gain characteristic of an AGC circuit according to a modulation type of a received broadcasting signal. A modulation type discriminating unit(107) discriminates a modulation type of a received broadcasting signal. A TOP(Take Over Point) adjusting unit(108) varies a TOP, which is a threshold point where the starts of gain changes between an RF(Radio Frequency) automatic gain controller(102) and an IF(Intermediate Frequency) automatic gain controller(106) are crossed, according to the modulation type discriminated in the modulation type discriminating unit(107).
