A code-division multiple access (CDMA) communications device receives a pilot signal and a traffic signal. The traffic signal, once decoded (220), is re-encoded (302), interleaved (304) and compared (305) with a delayed (307) undecoded traffic signal. The delay matches computation delays. The comparison of re-encoded and undecoded traffic signals is a measure of channel conditions. This measure may thus be combined (308) with a measure from the pilot signal to give a better estimate of channel conditions than would be possible using the pilot signal alone.
