A method for displaying a progress state in the upgrade of a cable modem and an image receiving apparatus therefor are provided to allow a user to know whether the software of the cable modem is upgraded and an upgrade progress state. An image receiving apparatus includes a cable modem(180) and a CPU(190). The CPU(190) requests software version information from the cable modem(180), checks the software version information received from the cable modem(180), compares the checked software version information with version information of downloaded software, and judges whether a version of the downloaded software is a new version. If the version of the downloaded software is the new version, the CPU(190) transmits a software upgrade command to the cable modem(180). If the cable modem(180) starts the upgrade of the software of the new version, the CPU(190) displays an upgrade progress state.
