The invention relates to a method for determining the phasing of a direct-injection internal combustion engine, during which the following steps are carried out: a first sensor (2) is used that comprises a target (6) connected to the crankshaft and comprising a number of markers (8); a second sensor (12) is used that comprises a target (16) connected to the camshaft and comprising a number of teeth (D1, D2, D3), a number of gaps (C1, C2, C 3), and a number of faces (F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6) separating the teeth (D1, D2, D3) and the gaps (C1, C2, C3); the rotation of the engine is controlled from a start position; the markers (8) of the target (6) of the first sensor (2) are counted; the faces (F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6) of the target of the second sensor are detected; whereupon the phasing of the engine is deduced.
