An automatic control system for keeping a safe driving distance of a vehicle and a method thereof are provided to prevent the vehicle from bumping against an obstacle before the obstacle approaches within a safe distance, by a mechanical mechanism for controlling the vehicle speed by moving up a guide stopper and pushing up an accelerator pedal at the same time. In an automatic control system for a safe driving distance of a vehicle, a sensor(100) senses vehicles or obstacles positioned in front of own vehicle. An ECU(Electronic Control Unit)(200) is connected with the sensor to receive an electric signal transmitted from the sensor and execute a control command according to a pre-set program. A deceleration/braking control unit(300) comprises an accelerator unit(310) automatically controlling deceleration of the vehicle by the electric signal of the ECU; a guide stop unit(315) operated independently of the accelerator unit to control a vertical motion of an accelerator pedal; a brake unit(330) automatically controlling braking of the vehicle by the electric signal of the ECU; and a guide stop unit(350) operated independently of the brake unit to control the operation of a brake pedal. The ECU has a handle rotation degree signal transmitting unit(140) and a wiper signal transmitting unit(150) electrically connected to the sensor.
