A network device and an information protocol for an open network system are provided to previously prevent a wrong operation in setting up state information having an invalid value for an arbitrary device or service by structurizing information for the source of state information with the state information, providing the structured information to another device or service, and previously judging whether the state information is effectively operated. If a user, who is enjoying a content, makes a bookmarking request(S101), a CP(Control Point) invokes a "GetStateVariable()" action to the RCS(Rendering Control Service) and AVTS(AVT Service) of a media renderer and obtains the state variables allocated to the presently streamed content object(S102). Then the CP invokes a "CreateObject" action to the CDS(Content Directory Service) of a media server for the creation of a bookmark object, and transfers necessary information, which should be contained in the bookmark object, through an input argument(S103). The CDS, based on the information contained in the input argument, creates a bookmark object. At this moment, the CDS appoints the identifier of the bookmark object according to a preset method, records it as the identifier of the created bookmark item, and completes the operation for bookmark creation(S104).
