<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color separation optical system having a small deterioration of a light amount by improving black color and color irregularity. <P>SOLUTION: The color separation optical system 3 has a dichroic face 9 which transmits light G of a first wavelength band out of light G from a light source 1 and reflects pieces of light R, B of a longer wavelength band than the first wavelength band, and a polarization separation face 10a incident by light transmitting the dichroic face. In the first wavelength band, linear polarization incident at a smaller incident angle than 45 degrees on the dichroic face and incident at a larger incident angle than 45 degrees to a polarization separation face is made first polarization light. The first wavelength band is longer wavelength than the wavelength in which a transmittance of the dichroic face is maximum, and the wavelength in which the transmittance of the dichroic face is 10% is Wa.
