PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease light shielding property as an element configuration, and to improve contrast, when the element is used as a display element. SOLUTION: The magneto-optical element 10 has a fine particle arrangement layer 3, containing at least metal magnetic fine particles arranged regularly on a nonmagnetic support 1. Magnetization is generated by applying an external magnetic field on the metal magnetic fine particles, and a linearly polarized light is made incident on the metal magnetic fine particles, so that a magneto-optical effect is induced by the interaction between the incident light on the metal magnetic fine particles and the surface plasmon oscillation of the metal.
