PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image projection optical system for avoiding a deterioration in brightness of images while deteriorating illuminance of a black display region. SOLUTION: The image projection optical system has an image formation element 3 for forming images in a second region 3c by fixing the images a first region 3b out of an image forming region in a readiness for black display, a projection lens 4 for projecting light from the image formation element on a face S to be projected, and a shading member 5 for shading light from the first region by being arranged in a projection lens or to the face side to be projected rather than the inside of the projection lens.
