A method and an apparatus for generating a document in a portable terminal are provided to merge multiple short messages selected by a predetermined reference among short messages received from the mobile terminal and change merged short messages to one document file, thereby displaying multiple messages in the mobile terminal at once. An apparatus for generating a document in a portable terminal comprises the followings: a document generating unit(130) for decoding multiple messages matched to a predetermined reference among multiple received messages, encoding the decoded message by a predetermined format, merging the encoded result and generating one document file; and a storing unit(140) for storing the generated document file. The document generating unit has a file generating unit(132) and a file encoding unit(134).
