The device has a linear movable carriage (14), which carries a measuring device (16) e.g. camera, or a tool holder. A positioning device positions the carriage along its driving axle, and a manually operated control device (20), which is in the form of a hand wheel, operates the positioning device. The control device has a force sensor for measuring force exerted on the control device. The positioning device is operated as a function of force measured by the force sensor. The positioning device is provided for conversion of the rotation of a shaft (12) into a linear motion of the carriage.
