<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting animal species for 14 animal species of Homo sapiens, Cercopithecus aethiops, Macaca irus, Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus, Cricetulus griseus, Mesocricetus auratus, Cavia porcellus, Oryctolagus cuniculus, Canis familiaris, Felis catus, Bos taurus, Sus scrofa domesticus and Gallus gallus domesticus L. considered to be used for study purposes. <P>SOLUTION: The method for detecting the animal species is carried out by using a universal primer targeting a mitochondrial DNA sequence of the 14 species of the objective animals and a species-detecting primer specific for the animal species. The objective mitochondrial DNA region is initially amplified with the universal primer to provide a primary amplification product. The resultant primary amplification product is used as a specimen to carry out secondary amplification with the species-detecting primer specific for each of the animal species.
