PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a transition metal compound to be used as a catalyst for producing a high-molecular weight polyolefin. SOLUTION: The method for producing the transition metal compound comprises the following operations (A) and (B): The operation (A) comprises the following: One equivalent of an organometallic compound of the general formula (3): R<SP>9</SP><SB>x</SB>M<SP>2</SP>X<SP>3</SP><SB>(y-x)</SB>or a metal hydride is reacted to a substrate followed by, without isolating the resultant compound's monoanion metal salt, reaction with a compound of the general formula (4): R<SP>1</SP>X<SP>4</SP>, or instead of the compound (4), with either one of compounds of the respective general formulas: R<SP>2</SP>X<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>X<SP>4</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>X<SP>4</SP>, and the above operation (A) is repeated to introduce one or more substituents into the cyclopentadienyl ring moiety. The subsequent operation (B) comprises the following: Two equivalents of a compound (3) is reacted to the compound obtained by the repeated operation (A) followed by reaction with one equivalent of a transition metal halide.
