PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an outside diameter control method and an outside diameter control device for a glass preform in which, when such restriction is imposed on manipulated variable that the manipulated variable lies within the prescribed range, the manipulated variable can be converged in a short period of time by gradual variation near a line shape. SOLUTION: When a glass preform is heated, manipulated variable is obtained from the deviation between the objective value SV and the measured value PV of the outside diameter of the glass preform, and control is performed in such a manner that the manipulated variable reaches the prescribed value. A manipulated variable U calculated at least by a proportional operation means 12 and an integration operation means 13 is differentiated by a differentiation means 17, thereafter, the differentiated value is made into a differentiated value limited within a prescribed change rate by a change rate limiting means 16. Next, the differentiated value is integrated by an integration means 18 to be output as a manipulated variable MV to a control object. Further, a difference value between a differentiated valueδa before being limited to the prescribed change rate and a differentiated valueδb having passed through the change rate limiting means is calculated, and the deviation input in the integration operation means 13 is controlled by the difference value.
