PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly detect the residual amount of paper sheets with high accuracy by correcting the effect of the difference of devices and the secular change of components in a device for detecting the residual amount of paper sheets in a paper feed tray having a bottom plate elevating/lowering at a predetermined height position based on the elevation amount according to the residual amount of the paper sheets stacked on the bottom plate. SOLUTION: A paper sheet residual amount detection device 10 comprises: a first detection means which has a lifter for elevating a bottom plate of a paper feed tray to a predetermined position, elevates the bottom plate by the lifter for elevating the bottom plate of the paper feed tray to the predetermined position with the reference value being the value corresponding to the elevation amount of the bottom plate to the predetermined position by the lifter in a state in which no paper sheet is present in the paper feed tray when it is detected that there is no paper sheet in the paper feed tray, and detects the value corresponding to the elevation amount of the bottom plate in this condition; and a first correction means for correcting the reference value based on the value detected by the first detection means.
