[Also in Division D1] A polymer comprises the recurring unit where R is a C 2-4 alkylene radical which may be substituted with a C 1-4 alkyl radical, a carboxyl group or a carbalkoxy group, R<SP>1</SP> is H or a C 1-4 alkyl radical; R<SP>II</SP> and R<SP>III</SP> are H, a C 1-4 alkyl, aryl, aryloxy, or C 1-4 alkoxy radical, R<SP>IV</SP> is -OCOCH 3 , -COOCH 3 or -CN and n is 2-24. The polymer may be prepared by reacting a copolymer comprising the unit with an aminothiol of formula where R, R<SP>I</SP>, R<SP>II</SP>, R<SP>III</SP> and R<SP>IV</SP> are as before. In examples a methyl acrylate/maleic anhydride, maleic anhydride/methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile/maleic anhydride or maleic anhydride/vinyl acetate copolymers were condensed with #-mercaptoethylamine, the copolymer having been obtained by polymerizing the monomers in toluene using benzoyl peroxide or azo-bis-isobutyronitrile as catalyst. The polymer may be compounded with urea, ammonia and water.
